I understand that Sykes is a well known name in Huddersfield going back to the 13th century. I am wanting more information regarding Joseph Sykes b. 1788, who had a daughter Mary b. 1808, and whose parents names were John and Martha (nee Johnson). If anyone has researched the Sykes family covering the 18th century I would very much like to know. Mary married Martin Webb and I am a direct descendent of them.

My wife is a descendant of Joseph Webb b. 16 May 1809 and Mary Sykes b. 1808. Joseph's father was Martin b. c.1778 and Hannah. I think they may be the same people but Mary the son of Martin. What do you think? I do not have any information extending back beyond those people but would be interested to know if you have found out anything more.

The information you have provided regarding your wife's ancestors Martin and Hannah matches the information I have, so your wife and I are I cousins. My main interest is in finding more about Mary Sykes' parents and siblings. I understand she had a sister. Regarding Martin, he was born in Ireland but I have not been able to find out where. He ran away to England when aged 15.I have some information regarding events in Huddersfield after he arrived there.
I'm not sure what you mean about "Mary the son of Martin", but there was no daughter of Martin Webb named Mary. And Mary Sykes was the daughter of Joseph Sykes.
